Material Selection

Titanium Grade 2 may be selected for components where corrosion resistance and moderate strength are the main requirements. Titanium Grade 5 is often used when higher mechanical strength is required within a compact component design.

The material grade should be confirmed according to the working environment, mechanical requirements, mating materials and customer specification. Material certificates can also be supplied when requested during quotation.

CNC Turning and Secondary Machining

Most titanium sleeves and bushings are initially produced by CNC turning. The turning process controls the outer diameter, internal bore, total length, shoulders and end faces.

Components with flats, radial holes, slots or other non-rotational features may require CNC milling or turn-mill machining after the main turning operations. Planning these processes together helps maintain the relationship between the bore and secondary features.

For long or thin-wall sleeves, suitable workholding and cutting parameters are important because excessive clamping force or machining heat may affect roundness and wall consistency.

Applying unnecessarily tight tolerances to every dimension can increase machining and inspection costs. It is more practical to identify the dimensions that directly affect assembly and function.

Surface Finish and Edge Treatment

The machined surface may be retained when it meets the functional and cosmetic requirements. Other options may include polishing, glass bead blasting, brushing or customer-specified finishing.

Internal bores, threads and mating diameters should be protected during finishing when dimensional changes could affect assembly. Sharp edges and machining burrs should also be removed without changing critical dimensions.
