Titanium dental discs for CAD/CAM milling can look very similar at first glance, but the outer-edge geometry may be different. Two common formats are discs with a stepped edge and discs without a step.
The correct format depends on the customer's disc holder, milling system and existing blank specification. For this reason, diameter and thickness alone may not provide enough information when ordering titanium dental milling blanks.
What Does “With Step” Mean on a Titanium Dental Disc?
A titanium dental disc with step has a machined change in diameter or edge thickness around the outside of the blank. Instead of one straight cylindrical outer surface, the edge contains a defined shoulder or stepped profile.
This feature can be used to locate or retain the disc according to the geometry of a particular CAD/CAM holder. The step dimensions therefore need to correspond to the customer's actual blank specification or milling-system requirement.
What Is a Titanium Dental Disc Without Step?
A without-step disc has a simpler outer-edge profile without the additional locating shoulder. The outside edge remains relatively straight according to the specified disc geometry.
This format may be used in milling systems or fixtures designed for flat-edge blanks. As with stepped discs, compatibility should be confirmed from the holder dimensions or an existing blank rather than assumed from diameter alone.
“With step” and “without step” should not be treated as a quality difference. They are different blank geometries designed to match different holder or milling-system requirements.
Why the Edge Profile Matters
A dental disc needs to be positioned securely in the milling holder before machining begins. The outside geometry is therefore not merely cosmetic. It is part of the relationship between the blank and the fixture that holds it.
If a customer requires a stepped disc, the relevant outside diameters, step width, step position and overall thickness should correspond to the intended holder. A blank with the correct nominal diameter but the wrong edge profile may not match the required fixture.
Diameter Alone Is Not a Complete Dental Disc Specification
It is common to describe a dental disc by its nominal diameter and thickness. These dimensions are useful, but they may not completely define the blank.
Depending on the design, additional dimensions can include:
- Main outside diameter
- Overall thickness
- Step diameter
- Step width or height
- Edge geometry
- Center hole or groove, when required
- Other holder-related features
For repeat production, these dimensions should be defined clearly so that replacement batches remain consistent with the customer's established blank format.
How to Identify the Disc Format You Need
The easiest method is to check the technical specification for the existing titanium blank or the requirements of the milling holder. When a formal drawing is available, it provides the clearest reference for manufacturing.
If a drawing is not available, photographs and measurements of an existing blank can help with an initial review. For custom manufacturing, however, critical dimensions should be confirmed before batch production.
If you already use a titanium disc successfully, send its drawing or complete dimensions together with a side-view photo. The side view is particularly useful because it clearly shows whether the blank has a stepped edge.
CNC Machining the Step Profile
Titanium dental discs are rotational components, making CNC turning a practical process for controlling diameter, thickness and stepped edge geometry.
For a stepped blank, the machining process must maintain the dimensional relationship between the main disc body and the locating edge. Stable workholding and controlled turning help maintain consistent dimensions across repeat batches.
The machining method may appear straightforward, but repeatability is important when multiple blanks are intended for the same milling holder.
Material Grade Is a Separate Specification
The edge format does not determine the titanium grade. Both stepped and non-stepped blanks can be manufactured in the titanium material specified by the customer.
Sunrise Industrial supplies titanium dental discs in Grade 2, Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V and other project-specific titanium grades when required. Material grade, dimensional format and documentation requirements should therefore be listed separately in the inquiry.
Standard and Custom Thickness Options
Titanium dental discs can be supplied in multiple thicknesses according to the customer's milling requirements. Common thickness options include 10 mm, 12 mm, 14 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, 20 mm, 22 mm and 25 mm, while other dimensions can be reviewed for custom projects.
Thickness should be selected according to the customer's milling requirements and should not be inferred from whether the disc has a stepped or non-stepped edge.
Inspection of Diameter, Thickness and Step Dimensions
Inspection should focus on the dimensions defined by the customer's blank specification. For a basic flat-edge disc, this may primarily involve diameter, thickness and surface condition.
A stepped disc adds further dimensional relationships that may need to be checked, including the step diameter and its position relative to the main disc body. Appropriate measuring equipment can be selected according to the drawing tolerance and feature being inspected.
Can an Existing Dental Disc Be Used as a Reference?
An existing blank can be useful when a buyer needs an alternative supply source but does not have complete manufacturing information immediately available. The sample can help identify the general diameter, thickness and edge format.
For production, however, confirmed dimensions are preferable. A drawing or approved dimensional specification reduces uncertainty and provides a clear reference for inspection and repeat orders.
