SACH foot adapters are connection components used between a prosthetic foot and other structural parts of a modular lower limb prosthetic system. Although the component is relatively compact, its thread, locating features, base geometry and overall dimensions all influence assembly and positioning.
Sunrise Industrial manufactures SACH foot adapters and other custom prosthetic foot connection components according to customer drawings, samples and technical requirements. Different materials, dimensions, connection structures and surface finishes can be produced for OEM projects.
What Is a SACH Foot Adapter?
A SACH foot adapter provides a mechanical connection between the prosthetic foot section and the components above it. Depending on the prosthetic system, the adapter may use threaded connections, locating pins, mounting holes or a specially machined base to achieve the required assembly.
Unlike a socket adapter, which is positioned closer to the prosthetic socket, a SACH foot adapter is primarily designed around the foot-side connection. This distinction is useful when selecting or developing components for a modular lower limb system.
Important Design Features
| Feature | Manufacturing Consideration |
|---|---|
| Threaded Connection | Thread size, pitch, depth and fit should match the mating component. |
| Locating Pin or Hole | Position accuracy helps maintain repeatable assembly and orientation. |
| Base Profile | The base shape should correspond with the foot-side mounting structure. |
| Overall Height | Different designs may require compact or extended connection heights. |
| Edges and Radii | Controlled chamfers and radii improve assembly and remove sharp edges. |
Titanium, Stainless Steel or Aluminum?
Material selection depends on the component design, required strength, weight target, surface treatment and customer specification. Titanium is a useful option when high strength-to-weight performance and corrosion resistance are important. Stainless steel provides good strength and durability, while aluminum can be considered for designs where reducing component weight is a priority.
For OEM production, material grade should be confirmed from the approved drawing rather than selected only by the general product category. Different foot adapter designs can have different wall thicknesses, thread sizes and structural requirements.
CNC Machining of SACH Foot Adapters
SACH foot adapters commonly combine turned and milled features. CNC turning can be used for cylindrical sections, shoulders, diameters and threaded features, while milling or drilling operations may be required for locating holes, flats, slots or non-round base geometry.
The machining sequence should consider the relationship between the thread axis, locating features and base surfaces. Controlling these features from stable machining references helps maintain consistent assembly dimensions across repeat production batches.
Thread and Connection Accuracy
Thread quality is one of the key inspection areas for a foot adapter. The mating part should assemble smoothly without excessive looseness or interference. Thread pitch, effective length, diameter and entry chamfer therefore need to follow the drawing consistently.
Where a locating pin or secondary hole is used together with the thread, its position should also be controlled relative to the main connection axis. Checking only the individual dimensions may not be sufficient if the relationship between these features affects final assembly.
Typical Inspection Points
| Inspection Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Thread Specification | Confirms compatibility with the mating foot component. |
| Overall Height | Maintains the specified assembly dimension. |
| Pin and Hole Position | Supports correct orientation and repeatable assembly. |
| Base Geometry | Ensures proper contact with the mating structure. |
| Surface and Burrs | Confirms clean machining and suitable finished appearance. |
Surface Finishing
Surface requirements vary with material and customer specification. Parts may be supplied with a machined finish, polished or blasted surface, or another specified treatment. Aluminum components may also use anodizing when required by the project.
Threaded areas, locating surfaces and other functional dimensions should be considered before finishing so that the completed part continues to meet its assembly requirements.
Custom SACH Foot Adapters for OEM Projects
There is no need for every SACH foot adapter to use the same dimensions or connection structure. Prosthetic component manufacturers may have their own foot designs, assembly interfaces, overall height requirements and material preferences.
For this reason, drawing-based manufacturing is particularly useful for OEM projects. Existing samples can also be used as a manufacturing reference when a complete production drawing is not initially available.
Information Helpful for Quotation
Please provide the 2D drawing or 3D model, material grade, thread specification, overall dimensions, surface finish, quantity and any mating-component information available. For an existing design, a physical sample or clear assembly photos can also help with manufacturing review.
