Custom Titanium Shafts: CNC Turning, Tolerances and Precision Machining Guide

Titanium shafts are used in applications where low weight, corrosion resistance and high mechanical performance are important. For custom shaft components, the machining process must control not only the basic diameter and length, but also concentricity, straightness, surface finish and the relationship between different functional surfaces.

Sunrise Industrial manufactures custom titanium shafts from customer drawings, samples and specified dimensions, with CNC turning and additional machining processes available for more complex designs.

What Makes a Titanium Shaft a Precision Component?

A shaft may appear to be a relatively simple turned part, but its performance often depends on several dimensions working together. A bearing seat, threaded section, shoulder, groove or mating diameter can each have different requirements.

Typical drawing requirements may include:

  • Outside diameter and diameter tolerances
  • Overall length and individual section lengths
  • Concentricity or runout requirements
  • Thread dimensions and specifications
  • Shoulder and groove dimensions
  • Surface roughness requirements
  • Chamfers, radii and edge conditions

For assemblies with rotating or closely fitted components, these requirements are often more important than the nominal dimensions alone.

CNC Turning for Custom Titanium Shafts

CNC turning is commonly used for titanium shafts because many shaft geometries are rotationally symmetrical. A suitable turning process can efficiently produce multiple diameters, shoulders, grooves and threaded sections in one setup.

Titanium also requires appropriate cutting conditions and tool management. Excessive cutting heat, unsuitable speeds or poor chip control can affect tool life and surface quality. Stable workholding and a controlled machining sequence are therefore important when producing precision titanium shaft components.

For more complicated shafts, CNC turning can be combined with milling, drilling, thread machining, grinding or other secondary operations according to the drawing.

Material Selection for Titanium Shafts

Grade 5 titanium is frequently selected for custom machined components when a combination of strength, low density and corrosion resistance is required. Other titanium grades may be suitable depending on the application and drawing requirements.

The material grade should always be confirmed before production because mechanical properties, machining behavior and application requirements can differ between grades.

Tolerance and Surface Finish Considerations

Not every dimension on a shaft needs the same tolerance. Applying unnecessarily tight tolerances to every feature can increase machining time and cost without improving the function of the finished component.

A practical drawing should identify the critical dimensions and functional surfaces clearly. Bearing seats, mating diameters, threaded areas and locating shoulders may require closer control than non-functional sections.

Surface finish is also important where the shaft contacts bearings, seals or other moving components. Depending on the application, machining, polishing or other finishing processes may be considered.

Inspection of Custom Titanium Shafts

Inspection requirements depend on the drawing and application. Common checks include diameter, length, thread dimensions, concentricity, runout and surface condition.

For drawing-based OEM production, inspection equipment should be selected according to the actual tolerance requirements. Dimensional inspection can include conventional measuring tools as well as CMM or other precision inspection equipment when required.

Custom Production Based on Drawings or Samples

Custom titanium shafts are normally produced according to customer drawings, 3D models or physical samples. Before quotation, it is useful to provide the material grade, dimensions, tolerances, surface finish, quantity and any special inspection requirements.

For repeat orders, the same machining process and inspection requirements can be maintained to support consistent production between batches.
