The 30mm pylon is widely used as a structural connection in modular lower-limb prosthetic systems. A 30mm prosthetic tube adapter provides the interface between this tube and other modular components such as pyramids, receivers and alignment adapters.
Although these adapters are relatively compact, tube fit, connection geometry, wall thickness, threads and overall height all influence manufacturing requirements. Sunrise Industrial manufactures prosthetic tube adapters according to customer drawings, samples and assembly specifications for OEM and custom projects.
What Is a 30mm Prosthetic Tube Adapter?
A 30mm prosthetic tube adapter is a machined connection component designed to interface with a 30mm prosthetic pylon or tube. Depending on the prosthetic system, the opposite end of the adapter may incorporate a male pyramid, female receiver or another custom connection structure.
The term “30mm” normally refers to the tube connection size rather than the overall outside diameter of the complete adapter. Because different manufacturers use different interface geometries, final dimensions should always be confirmed from the approved drawing or mating component.
Common 30mm Tube Adapter Configurations
Tube adapters can be designed in several configurations depending on where they are positioned in the modular assembly. Some designs provide a direct pyramid connection, while others use a receiver or a separate tube-and-head structure.
| Configuration | Typical Structure |
|---|---|
| Tube Adapter with Male Pyramid | 30mm tube interface combined with a male pyramid connection |
| Tube Adapter with Receiver | Tube connection combined with a female receiver interface |
| Low-Profile Tube Adapter | Reduced overall height for compact modular assemblies |
| Tube Head with Pylon | Machined adapter head assembled with a prosthetic tube according to the required length |
Male Pyramid Tube Adapters
A tube adapter with male pyramid combines the pylon connection and pyramid interface within one compact component. The pyramid geometry is one of the important machining areas because it interfaces with a compatible receiver and contributes to alignment adjustment within the modular assembly.
Depending on the design, the pyramid may be solid or include a center hole or through-hole. Overall height, tube bore, pyramid dimensions and transition radii can also vary between different OEM systems.
Receiver-Type Tube Adapters
Instead of a male pyramid, some 30mm tube adapters incorporate a female receiver. The receiver normally works with a compatible pyramid and may use several adjustment screws positioned around the receiver body.
For CNC manufacturing, the receiver opening, internal geometry, screw-hole position and threads need to be controlled in relation to the tube connection. This helps maintain repeatable assembly between mating components produced in different batches.
Material Selection: Titanium, Stainless Steel or Aluminum
Material selection depends on the component design, target weight, mechanical requirements, surface finish and cost. Titanium, stainless steel and aluminum are all used for different prosthetic tube adapter projects.
| Material | Manufacturing Consideration |
|---|---|
| Ti-6Al-4V | High strength-to-weight ratio and good corrosion resistance for lightweight machined adapters |
| Stainless Steel | Suitable where strength, durability and material cost are key project considerations |
| Aluminum | Low density makes it useful for designs where minimizing component weight is a priority |
CNC Machining the 30mm Tube Interface
The tube connection is one of the primary functional areas of a prosthetic tube adapter. CNC turning is commonly used to produce the cylindrical body, bore, shoulders and related concentric features before milling, drilling or threading operations are completed.
A nominal 30mm connection does not mean that every product should be machined to one universal dimension. Fit, tolerance and assembly method depend on the customer's design. For this reason, Sunrise Industrial machines the tube interface according to drawing requirements rather than applying one fixed tolerance to all 30mm adapters.
Why Concentricity and Alignment Matter
The tube bore, outside diameter and pyramid or receiver structure are geometrically related. Maintaining suitable machining references between these features helps control the alignment of the finished adapter.
For repeat orders, consistent datum selection, tooling and inspection also help reduce variation between production batches. This becomes particularly important when an OEM customer uses the adapter as part of a larger modular component family.
Low-Profile Designs and Weight Reduction
Some prosthetic assemblies require a shorter adapter to reduce overall build height. Low-profile tube adapters can achieve this by integrating the tube interface and pyramid connection within a compact body.
Reducing height or weight, however, should follow the approved component design. Wall thickness, transition areas, screw locations and connection geometry need to remain consistent with the customer's structural requirements rather than being reduced only for appearance or material saving.
Inspection Points for Repeat Production
| Inspection Area | What Is Checked |
|---|---|
| Tube Interface | Diameter, bore, fit-related dimensions and concentricity |
| Pyramid / Receiver | Interface geometry and dimensional consistency |
| Threads and Holes | Thread specification, hole position and machining quality |
| Overall Height | Maintains the specified assembly dimension |
| Surface Condition | Burr removal, machining marks and specified surface finish |
Custom 30mm Tube Adapters for OEM Projects
Not every 30mm prosthetic tube adapter follows the same design. Customers may require different overall heights, pyramid structures, receiver geometries, center holes, wall thicknesses, screw specifications or surface finishes.
For custom projects, a 2D drawing and 3D model provide the clearest manufacturing reference. Physical samples can also be useful when an existing component needs to be reproduced or when mating dimensions need to be reviewed before machining.
Information Helpful for Quotation
For a 30mm prosthetic tube adapter quotation, provide the drawing or 3D model, material, tube interface dimensions, pyramid or receiver type, thread specifications, surface finish and required quantity. For assemblies using a separate pylon, the tube material and required length should also be specified.
